Ben Arthur & SongWriter (EP43)

Tuesday Feb 14, 2023

Tuesday Feb 14, 2023

The featured artist in this episode is Ben Arthur – a New York-based singer, songwriter, novelist, and podcaster – with Virginia roots. Ben is passionate about exploring how inspiration works and how creativity functions and relates to art. Ben strongly believes that art can alleviate people’s suffering and how the connection of art to money by society is a cultural sickness. He spearheads multiple projects that probe the intersection and interplay between literature, music, and visual art.
Ben's SongWriter podcast “turns stories into songs” by pairing literary and musical artists together. Featured artists include Questlove, Joyce Carol Oates, David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, Roxane Gay, Amanda Shires of The Highwomen, Cheryl Strayed, Susan Orlean, Steve Earle, George Saunders, and Katie Melua.
In Ben's Emmy-nominated SongCraft Presents video series, each segment brings together two artists, unknown to each other, to write a song in a three-hour session. From developing the concept and lyrics to its actual composition and arrangement to performance, the artists are challenged to make not a good song, but a great song.
Since 1997, Ben Arthur the musician, has released 10 albums since 1997 and has been featured in Rolling Stone, Forbes, and American Songwriter magazines as well as the New York Times. He has opened for Tori Amos, Shawn Colvin, Bruce Hornsby, Sophie B. Hawkins, Toots & the Maytals, Old 97s, and many years ago, he shared an open mic stage with an up-and-coming artist Charlottesville, Virginia’s very own Dave Matthews.
Join Team Derringer as they delve into Ben's catalog of music, discover the stories behind his songs, and learn about the interesting artists he has featured on his SongWriter podcast.

Fresh off their initial album, Hellscape, Baton Rouge-based Karma and the Killjoys are on the cusp of something big. The female-led, piano-rock band is comprised of Rain Scott-Catoire (keys, vocals), Sydni Myers (vocals), Thomas Vercher (drums), Tim Marchand (bass), and Michael Blount (guitar).  Founding members Scott-Catoire and Myers write the band’s songs and compose the quintet’s music.
The band's piano-forward sound blends rock, pop, and phenomenal vocal harmonies. Their genre-defying music is reminiscent of Fiona Apple, Muse, Elton John, Danny Elfman, Tori Amos, Gwen Stefani, Madness, Ben Folds Five, and Meat Loaf. With the release of their impressive freshman album, the bar has been set high. Join us as Derringer Discoveries listeners from all over the world – many of whom are musicians themselves – sing the praises of Karma and the Killjoys.
The playlist for this episode features songs by Karma and the Killjoys, as well as songs by the artists who inspire them and songs by recording artists from around the world who are quoted in this episode.  Share the love by streaming and "Liking" this playlist: Check Out Karma

Bowie to The Vow (EP40)

Tuesday Nov 22, 2022

Tuesday Nov 22, 2022

In the late 1960s, a young Graham Trust from Liverpool, England, learned the foundations of vocal performance from his father, a well-respected community choirmaster. As young Graham grew, he was enthralled with the angst-ridden sound of the punk bands blaring from the radio – in particular those played by BBC Radio 2’s renowned disc jockey, John Peel.
As a teenager, Graham combined his love of vocal harmonies with the sounds of the burgeoning punk scene and founded a post-punk band with schoolmates, notably a lad named Martyn Gilbert. From 1989 to 1991, Graham, Martyn, and drummer Tony Potter achieved regional fame performing as the band, The Vow – but it was only a short time later that the band split up.
During the ensuing years, Graham continued to hone his craft as a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist and followed his passion for music. Having built a large portfolio of promising original songs and now having the resources required for proper recording and music production, thanks to steady employment in the corporate world, he entered the recording studio in 2008 with the intent to share his musical creations with the world.
Writing all the songs, performing all the vocals, and recording many of the instruments, The Vow is the brainchild of Graham Trust. Through the years he has enlisted a revolving roster of musicians, including his former mates Martyn Gilbert, Tony Potter, and onetime bassist Nick Reynolds. Joining Graham on recent recordings is producer, musician, and studio owner, Simon Denny - favored for his orchestral arrangements.
In this episode, Graham Trust of The Vow joins Team Derringer to discuss his fascination with songcraft, his early musical influences – including The Jam – and his latest song, Dude for David, a musical tribute to David Bowie. Team Derringer counts down their top five favorite songs by The Vow and, with very little effort, coaxes Graham into sharing the history of each.
We think you’ll enjoy this fun and entertaining interview with Graham Trust of The Vow and, on top of that, we’re sure you’ll fall in love with The Vow’s compelling music along the way.

Ukraine’s In.Vade (EP39)

Sunday Oct 16, 2022

Sunday Oct 16, 2022

While the world has watched in horror at Russia’s evil invasion of Ukraine, the people of Ukraine fight for victory but wish for peace. Still, out of the chaos of war comes compelling music.
In this episode, Team Derringer had the honor and pleasure of interviewing a Kyiv-based rock band, In.Vade, featuring guitarist-producer Ilia Kaplunenko and vocalist Elisabeth (Lisa) Shefer. The interview took place via Zoom on September 5, 2022. At the time of our interview, the war was relatively distant from Kyiv; however, since then, Russia has launched artillery into civilian areas of major Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv.
Team Derringer (Paul, Laura, Alton, and Dave) share their top five songs by In.Vade while Ilia and Lisa reveal the history and creative processes behind creating their music. Hear their musical influences and learn how they even wrote a song with plans for a major Ukrainian artist to sing and record with them… unbeknownst to him at the time.
Please join all of us here at Derringer Discoveries in praying for safety and peace for the people of Ukraine and especially for our friends, Ilia and Lisa.
